Station, Puduveypu
The fisheries Station, Puduveypu is located at a distance of about 2km west of Murikkumpadam in Vypeen Island. The station started functioning in the year 1979. The campus is mostly a saline marsh with man-groves and salt resistant varieties of grass and shrub. In selected locations, part of the land is converted into pond-bund systems for aquaculture and agricultural research purposes. The rest of the land subject to diurnal tidal inundations, forms the site for fish and shell fish seed collection.
Mandate of the Station |
The objective of the station is to develop appropriate farming techniques involving fish and to supply commercial brackish water fish seeds to the farmers and other research institutions. It also imparts practical training on brackish water fish culture to the students of the College of Fisheries, Panangad.
Accomplishments |
An easily adaptable and eco-friendly technique for tapping organic resources for a unique ecosystem of coastal waste land has been devised in a rational manner.
