Council felicitates Dr. T. V. Aravindakshan
Dr. T. V. Aravindakshan, Asst. Professor, College of Vety. and Animal Sciences,
Mannuthy, the recipient of the Rajib Goyal Young Scientist Award 2001
was felicitated by the General Council of KAU in its meeting held on July 26,
2003.

A. M. Ranjith selected to visit Brazil
The Indian National Science Academy has selected Dr. A. M.Ranjith,
Associate Professor, Dept. of Agricultural Entomology,
College of Horticulture for a visit to Brazil for four weeks under the
international collaboration exchange programme.
Conservation measures in fisheries
There is urgent need for the implementation of conservation measures in
fisheries to make this sector sustainable in the long run said Shri.
A.J.Tharakan, President, Sea Food Exporters Association of India. Some of the
developed countries have even discontinued sourcing raw material from those
countries, which do not ensure adequate conservation measures in fisheries. He
was speaking on the occasion of a function to initiate the Silver Jubilee
Celebrations of the College of Fisheries, Panangad. Dr.M.K.Mukundan, Joint
Director, CIFT presided over the function. Dr.K.K.Varma and S. Dinamony spoke on
the occasion. Dr. D. D.Nambudiri, Dean, College of Fisheries welcomed the
gathering. The Silver Jubilee Celebrations will be organized as an year long
function.
The KAU community express deep sorrow and hearty condolence on the untimely
demise of Dr. G. Sreekantan Nair, Dean, College of Agriculture, Vellayani who
passed away on August 11, 2003 due to heart attack.
Dr. Sreekantan Nair took the B.Sc. (Ag.) from the College of Agriculture,
Vellayani and M.Sc. (Hort.) from the Orissa University of Agriculture &
Technology, Bhuvaneswar. Dr. Nair secured Ph.D. degree in Horticulture from the
University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore. He had worked as the Professor
and Head, Dept. of Plantation Crops & Spices in the College of Horticulture,
Vellanikkara and was the Prof. and Head, Dept. of Horticulture in the College of
Agriculture, Vellayani.
Dr. P.A. Valsala and Dr. M. R. Shylaja, Asst. Professors of the KAU whom he had
guided for Ph.D. were awarded the coveted Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship for the
best Ph.D. thesis.
Dr. Sreekantan Nair was the proponent of Horticulture Therapy which gave solace
to hundreds of mentally retarded children at the Pope Paul Mercy Home, Thrissur
and Cheshire Home, Thiruvananthapuram. He had keen interest in the medicinal
plants and herbal medicines. He was the Director of the TBGRI, Palode for a
short period. He is survived by his wife Remadevi and daughter Shalini.

Vikas Rathan Gold Award
Dr. K. Narayanan Kutty, Senior Scientist, AICRP on Poultry, Mannuthy has been
honoured with the Rashtriya Vikas Rathan Gold Award instituted by the
International Integration and Growth Society, New Delhi for his outstanding
contribution in the field of poultry research.
Young
Scientist Award
Dr.N. Kishore Kumar, Asst. Prof, COA, Vellayani has secured the Young Scientist
Award 2003 for the outstanding work done in the field of extension, research and
field extension services. The award was presented to him at the National Seminar
on Extension Strategy for Promoting Development Initiative among Farming
Community held at GB Pant University of Agri & Tech., Pant Nagar.
Assumed charge
Dr. GSLHV Prasada Rao, Professor and Head, Department
of Agricultural Meteorology, College of Horticulture assumed charge
as Associate Dean of the College on July 10, 2003.
Dr. K. Pushkaran, Professor and Head, Department of
Plant Breeding and Genetics, College of Horticulture assumed office as
Director (Acad. & P. G. Studies) on October 3, 2003.
Dr. C. P. Mohammed, Prof. & Head, Dept. of Farm Power
Machinery, KCAET, Tavanur has assumed charge as the Dean of the
College on October 20, 2003.

Dr. K. John Thomas, Dean, KCAET, Tavanur has laid down office on Oct. 20, 2003.
Graduate in Agrl. Engg. from the GB Pant University of Agri. & Tech, Pant Nagar,
Dr. Thomas had his Post Graduate degree in Agrl Engg. from the Agrl. Institute,
Allahabad and Doctorate in Agrl. Engg. from the IIT, Kharagpur. He had also
undergone the International Post-graduate training course in Hydrological Data
for Water Resources Planning sponsored by UNESCO and Czechoslovakia. He had been
working as the Head of the Dept. of Irrigation and Drainage Engineering from
1986 and the first regular Dean of the faculty of Agrl. Engg. from 1993. He was
the member of the General Council and Executive Committee of KAU and Chairman of
the Agro Industries Corporation.
