College of Agriculture, Vellayani, Hosts International Seminar on Urban Agriculture

The College of Agriculture Vellayani, under the Kerala Agricultural University (KAU), hosted an "International Seminar on Sustainable Urban Agricultural Systems and Community Resilient Cities", on March 22nd and 23rd, 2024. This event marked a significant stride towards addressing the challenges of food insecurity and environmental degradation in the context of growing urbanization.

The seminar explored innovative and sustainable agricultural practices tailored for urban resilience. It focused on a range of topics, including vertical farming, rooftop gardens, hydroponics, aquaponics, and the socio-economic impacts of urban agriculture. Additionally, discussions covered the role of urban biodiversity and ecosystem services, as well as policy and governance issues related to urban agriculture.

Distinguished speakers from various fields graced the event. These included Dr. Nithya Rao from the University of East Anglia, UK; Shri. Sarath Babu M G from the National Institute of Urban Affairs, New Delhi; Dr. Sekhar L Kuriakose, Chief Resilience Officer of Kerala; Dr. Sheetal Patil from the Indian Institute of Human Settlements, Bengaluru; Dr. Parama Roy from IIT Madras; and Dr. P. Indira Devi from Kerala Agricultural University.

A highlight of the seminar was the inclusion of Shri. Sujit S.V, the Kerala State Awardee farmer for 2023.  The seminar facilitated knowledge exchange, showcased innovations, made policy recommendations, and fostered collaboration among professionals, academicians, and practitioners in the field of sustainable urban agriculture.

The College of Agriculture Vellayani, renowned for its contribution to agricultural education, research, and outreach, organized this seminar through its Training Service Scheme, emphasizing its commitment to tackling global agricultural challenges and promoting sustainable practices.

This seminar can be considered to be a pivotal event, bringing together leading experts and thought leaders to chart a sustainable future for urban agriculture and resilient cities.
